After the expansive production of “An Amazing Night of Music,” Seretse Small returns to the Jamaica Pegasus in a very different setting: close, stripped back and centred on the guitar. The Seretse Small Quintet brings together guitar, saxophone, keyboards, bass and drums for “Stretching Out,” an evening of Afro-Jamaican jazz, Caribbean and Latin colour, blues, funk and open-ended improvisation. The repertoire moves between Jamaican favourites, jazz standards, music from across the Americas and Small’s own compositions, including material connected to his forthcoming “By the Rivers” project. The point is simple: five musicians listening, responding and going where the music leads.
